CONCORDS

A concord is like an agreement. It makes sure that the different parts of a sentence are in agreement with one another.

Remember that lesson on NOUNS? Well... it's back...
We use noun prefixes (the beginning of a noun) to create concords.

Check the concord table below, but don't freak out! There's a simple explanation...

CREATE A CONCORD

A concord is basically a noun prefix that has been changed slightly. Each noun group has its own concord.
Remember the groups in the NOUN lesson? We use those to create concords.

SUBJECT CONCORD

The main person or actor of a sentence is the subject.
A subject concord is a slightly changed noun prefix.
A subject concord is added to the beginning of a word.
A subject concord is used to make sure that the subject is in agreement with the rest of the sentence.

EXAMPLE:
umntu uyasebenza -- the person is working

umntu -- person
u -- subject concord (is)
ya -- present tense (-ing)
sebenza -- work

OBJECT CONCORD

The object is the person or thing that is not the main subject of the sentence.
An object concord is a slightly changed noun prefix.
An object concord is added to the middle of a word.
We use object concords together with or in place of an object.

EXAMPLE:
Ndiyakuthanda -- I love you

Ndi -- I
ya -- present tense
ku -- you
thanda -- love
