NOUNS

Picture

Some languages - like French - divide words into 2 TYPES: masculine and feminine.
Nguni languages - like isiXhosa - originally divided words into more than 20 types!
Over time, some of these have fallen away. I have divided them into 9 groups to keep it true to the EASY XHOSA style.

HOW IT WORKS

- A noun is made up of TWO PARTS: a prefix and a root.
- Nouns are put into NOUN CLASSES (groups)
  based on their prefixes.
- A noun prefix tells us what TYPE of noun it is,
and it tells us if the noun is singular (one) or plural (many) -
  HOW MANY.

AND THEN IT GETS SERIOUS

1st column - singular (one)
2nd column - plural (many) linked to the 1st column
3rd column - a rough idea of which nouns fall into each category

FROM ONE TO MANY

To change a noun from singular (one) to plural (many), simply change the prefix.

TAKE NOTE

This is the most difficult thing to grasp when learning any Nguni language!
If you understand this, it will make your life so much easier...
